The format has no header, and no footer.
Each subtitle has four parts:

Line 1 is a sequential count of subtitles, starting with 1.

Line 2 is the start timecode, followed by the string " --> ", followed by the end timecode. Timecodes are in the format HH:MM:SS,MIL (hours, minutes, seconds, milliseconds).
The milliseconds are separated with a comma, NOT a dot.

The end timecode can optionally be followed by display coordinates (example " X1:100 X2:600 Y1:050 Y2:100"). Without coordinates displayed, each line of the subtitle will be centered and the block will appear at the bottom of the screen. I do not recommend this feature, because no player will do it

Lines 3 onward are the text of the subtitle. New lines are indicated by new lines (i.e. there's no "\n" code). The only formatting accepted are the following:

<b>text</b>: put text in boldface
<i>text</i>: put text in italics
<u>text</u>: underline text
<font color="#00ff00">text</font>: apply green color formatting to the text (you can use the font tag only to change color)
Tags can be combined (and should be nested properly). Note that the SubRip code appears to prefer whole-line formatting (no underlining just one word in the middle of a line).

Finally, successive subtitles are separated from each other by blank lines and Timing and Counting must be in ascending order.

The end of the file should be a blank line, else the last subtitle might not show - depending of the player used.
General: Dots (instead of commas) as the separator in the timecode can prevent subtitles from showing.
The *.srt-format is not made for overlapping and formatting. If you want to make freaky subs just use the *.ssa/*.ass-format.
Timing and Counting must be in ascending order.

VLC-Player 0.8.6a: Displays. Ignores formatting and coordinates. Messes with the fontcolor-tag because of wrong implementation. If suffix is in capitals (SRT) subs do not show up.

VLC-Player 0.8.6c: Displays. Ignores formatting and coordinates. fontcolor-tag not tested yet. If suffix is in capitals (SRT) subs do not show up.

Media Player Classic and Vobsub(2.23): Displays. Formatting okay, except bold-tag. Ignores coordinates.
I guess, Vobsub does not really rely on the defined suffix. So it also displays some *.ssa-features within *.srt-files. That makes some subbers using it. Simply said: this is dirty work. Don't use undefined tags.

General:

Scripts are plain text-files.
Within lines fields are separated by commas.
Wrong formatted lines are ignored.
Lines cannot be split.

		There are 5 possible sections:
		[Script Info] Necessary Header
		[v4 Styles] Necessary Descriptions
		[Events] Necessary Subtitles
		[Fonts] Not Necessary, not explaine here
		[Graphics] Not Necessary, not explained here



[Script Info]
This section contains headers and general information about the script.
The line that says “[Script Info]” must be the first line in a v4 script.


Header lines, [Script Info] section

;                      Semicolon. Any text can follow the semicolon.
                       This is a comment used in the script file only.
                       It is not visible when you load the script into SSA.
                       The semicolon must be the first character in the line.
                       This replaces the !: line type used in previous script versions.

Title:                 This is a description of the script. If the original author(s) did not
                       provide this information then <untitled> is automatically substituted.

Original Script:       The original author(s) of the script. If the original author(s) did not
                       provide this information then <unknown> is automatically substituted.

Original Translation:  The original translator of the dialogue. This entry does not
(optional)             appear if no information was entered by the author.

Original Editing:      The original script editor(s), typically whoever took the raw
(optional)             translation and turned it into idiomatic english and reworded
                       for readability. This entry does not appear if no information
                       was entered by the author.

Original Timing:       Whoever timed the original script. This entry does not appear if
(optional)             no information was entered by the author.
